How to Wear Hair Sticks

"The hair stick is the oldest accessory humans ever made. Norse, Celtic, Hellenic, Japanese, Yoruba — every ancient culture gathered hair and fixed it with a single sharp object. When you slide one of ours into your bun, you join that lineage."

Why hair sticks are having a moment

You've seen them on Pinterest, in dark academia mood boards, at renaissance fairs and pagan weddings. Hair sticks are everywhere right now — and yet, half the women who buy one tell us the same thing: "I love it, but I have no idea how to wear it."

This guide is for you. Whether your hair is poker-straight or coily, whisper-fine or shoulder-thick, whether you've worn buns since you were twelve or you're trying one for the first time — we'll walk you through every method, technique, and tip we know.

By the end of this guide, you'll be able to wear a hair stick confidently in under 30 seconds, in five different styles, for any occasion.

The anatomy of a hair stick

Before the how, the what.

A hair stick is a single sharp implement — typically 14-18 cm long — with two main parts:

  • The shaft — the long, smooth, slightly tapered body that does the actual holding
  • The head — the decorative end that stays visible, the part that gives the piece its personality (a dragon, a sword, a rose, a baphomet)

Unlike a hair fork (which has two prongs), a hair pin (which is smaller and bent), or a chopstick (which comes in pairs), a hair stick is a single piece. One slide, one hold, done.

Our pieces at HairSticksHaven are crafted from premium zinc alloy with antique silver finishes, weighing almost nothing while feeling substantial. They work on every hair type — the trick is just knowing the right method for yours.

The classic 4-step method (works for everyone)

This is the foundation. Master this and you can do every other variation.

  1. Gather your hair into a low bun. Use both hands. Twist your hair gently as you gather it — the twist creates the texture that the stick will hold onto. Don't pull tight; a loose, slightly messy bun holds a hair stick better than a sleek one.
  2. Hold the bun in place with your non-dominant hand. With your dominant hand, hold the hair stick horizontally, decorative head pointing outward.
  3. Slide the stick through the base of the bun. Push it in horizontally — through one side of the bun, under a small section of your scalp hair, and out the other side of the bun.
  4. Adjust. Push the stick further in until the decorative head sits flush against the bun. Check from the side — the stick should disappear into the bun, with only the head visible.

That's it. The first time you do this it'll take 2 minutes. By your fifth time, it'll take 15 seconds.

Method by hair type

Thick or curly hair

You have the easiest time of anyone. Your hair already has enough texture to grip the stick on its own. Use the classic method, slightly looser bun, and you're done.

For coily or 4c hair textures: do a low puff or bantu-twist base, then slide the stick through the densest part of the gathering. Our Dragon Hair Stick and Silver Axe Hair Stick are particularly good on thick textures because their substantial heads anchor beautifully against the bun.

Fine or thin hair

Your hair is silkier, so it has less friction. Two tricks to make hair sticks hold:

  • Tighter twist: when you gather your bun, twist your hair more times before forming the bun. Each twist adds friction.
  • Anchor pin trick: place one small bobby pin through the base of your bun first, then slide the hair stick through the pin's loop. The bobby pin acts as scaffolding.

Pieces with smaller, lighter heads like our Petite Butterfly or Silver Arrow work especially well for fine hair.

Freshly-washed hair

Clean, silky hair is the trickiest — too smooth for the stick to grip. Solutions:

  • Wait until day-2 hair if you can. Day-2 hair holds a hair stick like a dream.
  • If you must wear it on day-1: a tiny spray of dry shampoo or texture spray on the bun area adds the grip you need.
  • Use the anchor pin trick described above.

Short hair

Hair sticks work down to chin-length, but you'll need a half-up style rather than a full bun. Gather the top half of your hair into a small bun at the back of your crown, then slide the stick through it. Shorter, lighter pieces work best here.

Five styles to master

1. The classic low bun

Already covered above. The everyday workhorse. Pairs with everything from professional outfits to ritual robes.

2. The messy twist

Take a fistful of hair, twist it as you gather, fold the twisted rope back on itself, and pin with the hair stick horizontally through the fold. Looks intentionally undone, ideal for evening wear and gothic-romantic styling. Beautifully showcases pieces like our Silver Rose or Baphomet.

3. The half-up bun

Take the top half of your hair (from temples upward), gather it into a small bun at the back of your crown, and slide the stick horizontally through it. Leaves the bottom half flowing freely. Perfect for first dates, romantic dinners, ren faires.

4. The chignon

Sleeker version of the low bun. Gather hair tightly at the nape, twist it into a coil flat against your head, and pin with the hair stick. More formal silhouette — ideal for weddings, museum openings, dark academia photoshoots.

5. The crown braid + stick

Braid two sections of hair along the crown of your head, meeting at the back, and secure with the stick where they meet. Long pieces like our Winged Dagger work beautifully here because their length lets them span the meeting point.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Slipping out within an hour? Your bun was too tight or too smooth. Loosen the gathering and add a twist.
  • Stick won't go through? Your bun is too loose or sparse. Wrap it tighter or use a smaller bun base.
  • Hurts after a few minutes? You're pushing the stick through too much scalp hair. Aim for just the bun, not your scalp.
  • Stick keeps spinning loose? Slide it through at a slight upward angle (instead of perfectly horizontal). That angle creates more friction.

Which hair stick should you start with?

If you're choosing your first piece from the haven, here's our guide:

  • For everyday wear: our Silver Sword — the iconic Viking blade, polished antique silver, goes with literally everything.
  • For dramatic statement pieces: the Dragon Hair Stick or Baphomet — large, sculptural, conversation-starters.
  • For softness with bite: the Rose Sword — sword wrapped in a rose, our most-quoted piece.
  • For witchy daily rituals: the Antlers or Celestial Wand — gentler in scale, but heavy in meaning.

Or if you want to start with a curated set, our Bundles & Sets pair three pieces at saved prices — a quick way to build your daily arsenal.

A small ritual

One last note. Wearing a hair stick isn't just a technique — it's a small ritual you do once a day. Take a breath while you gather your hair. Notice the weight of the stick in your hand before you slide it in. Let it be a thirty-second moment of intention before the rest of the day starts.

It's a small thing. But small things become who you are.

Welcome to the haven.
