A Light Hair Pin in the Shape of a Moon Rabbit
The rabbit sits upright with its ears folded back, and its whole body is woven from gold filigree fine enough to see straight through. A square medallion is set into the belly with a character cut through it. Above, a cast hand holds out two beads on a short chain. Below, three strands of beads fall to teardrop pearls. Switched on, the filigree turns the rabbit into a paper lantern and the light comes out through the weave.
The Rabbit Lives on the Moon
In Chinese folklore the rabbit is not a garden animal. It lives on the moon and pounds the elixir of immortality with a mortar and pestle, and children carry rabbit lanterns through the streets at Mid-Autumn, the one night of the year everyone goes outside to look up. This is that lantern shrunk to the size of a bun ornament. Two versions: opaque red beads for the full festival reading, or pearl and pale peach for something you can wear on an ordinary evening.
Nothing lights up here. The Purple Hair Sticks carry a butterfly cut from smoked purple resin above two enamel plum blossoms.
