A Norse Hair Pin Marked with Valknut and Runes
A double-bitted axe head carries three symbols at once: the valknut struck on one cheek, three triangles locked together, and a runic compass rose on the other, spokes radiating from a centre point. Runes run in a line along the collar. The haft is scaled and knotted along its entire length down to a tapered tip, so the whole shaft has texture where most pins are bare. The antique silver is left heavily oxidised, darkness filling every carved mark and brightness worn onto the raised edges.
The knot of the slain and the sign that finds the way
The valknut appears on Gotland picture stones and in Norse ship burials, tied to Odin and to those he claimed. The compass rose was a stave meant to keep a traveller from losing the road in foul weather. Slide it through a low bun and the axe head sits proud above the coil while the carved haft disappears into the hair. It belongs to festivals and rituals, and holds a twist through an ordinary day.
Spirals cut clean through the head of the Celtic Hair Pin, on the principle that a line with no end cannot unravel.
