A Tassel Hair Pin Built to Fall, Not Sit

The shaft is engraved along its upper third with a fine scrolling pattern, then narrows past a small collar to a smooth point. Everything else hangs. A pearl and a green bead sit at the top of the drop, then an openwork flower medallion, then four chains strung with more beads, then the silk tassel. Six and a quarter inches of it, ending well below the bun, almost as long as the pin holding it up.

Buyao, the Ornament Named After Walking

Chinese hair ornaments of this kind are called buyao, literally step-shake. The name describes the mechanism: nothing happens until you move, and then everything does at once. The chains swing, the beads knock together, the tassel sweeps across your back. At just over an ounce it carries enough weight to keep its own rhythm instead of bouncing. Two versions, a bright silver shaft under a tassel that fades from white into green, and a darkened silver shaft under plain grey.

Weight comes off again with the Plum Blossom Hair Pin: one gold branch on black wood, pale petals around a single pearl.
