A Trident Hair Pin Cast for Deep Water

Three prongs rise from the head: a straight central tine ending in a leaf-shaped point, and two outer tines that curl away and fold back on themselves in open scrollwork. Below them a knopped collar marks where the head meets the shaft, and the shaft runs slim and tapered down to a small flared foot. The antique finish is left dark in the recesses and worn bright along every raised curve.

What the Three Prongs Stood For

The trident belonged to Poseidon, then to Neptune, and before either of them it was a fishing spear, a working tool that turned into a sign of command over water. Slide it through a low bun and the three tines stand clear above the coil while the shaft disappears entirely.

Bright silver or jet black, the Scythe Hair Pin sets a sun disc and curled horns below its crescent blade.
