A Wooden Hair Stick Turned on a Lathe
No carving, no stone, no charm. This is the oldest shape there is: a length of hardwood turned smooth, swelling slightly at the top and narrowing to a fine point, with three shallow rings cut into the upper third where the fingers naturally rest. The grain runs visibly along the whole length. Choose warm reddish brown, where the figure of the wood shows clearly, or deep near-black ebony tone, where it reads as a single dark line.
Why wood holds where metal slips
Grain has texture, and texture grips. That is the whole reason wood outlasted every other material for this job: a smooth metal shaft slides out of fine or freshly washed hair, while a turned wooden shaft catches and stays. It is light enough to forget by mid-morning and warm to the touch from the first minute. Wear it to a desk, a studio, a long walk, and it will darken quietly over the years.
Texture again, in cloth this time: the Rose Hair Pin shapes crimson velvet petals over a gold stem worked like bark.
