Bamboo Hair Sticks in Silver and Gold

The whole shaft is a length of bamboo cane, cast joint by joint, each node swelling slightly where the stem would ring. The upper third is glazed in translucent jade green that fades toward the metal below, with two small leaves opening at the sides. From the tip hangs a fine chain carrying a green bamboo segment and two pale beads: this is the bùyáo principle, literally step-shake, an ornament built to keep moving after you have stopped. Two finishes: cool silver, and warm gold.

The plant that bends and does not break

Bamboo is the scholar's plant in China, one of the Four Gentlemen alongside plum, orchid and chrysanthemum. It stands for uprightness and resilience, the thing that bows through a storm and stands again afterwards. Slide it through a low bun and the jade-green head rises above the coil while the ridged stem grips the twist. The texture is doing real work here, catching where a smooth shaft would slide.
