A Chinese Lantern Hairpin With a Roof and a Doorway

Look at the top of the shaft first. It ends in a small cast hand, fingers curled around a flower, holding out a short chain. Two pearls hang from that chain, then the lantern, and the lantern is genuinely built: a tiered roof with upturned eaves, slatted walls, a doorway, and a warm amber dome glowing at the base. Three short strands of pearls fall beneath it, each finished with a gold flower-shaped bell.

Why a Building Ends Up in Your Hair

Palace lanterns line the streets for the Lantern Festival, the fifteenth night of the lunar new year, when the first full moon is answered with thousands of small lights. Wearing a miniature one is an old habit: you carry the festival instead of attending it. The architecture is also what makes this piece work at close range. Eaves, slats and a doorway hold up when someone leans in to look, which a plain glowing bead does not. Two versions, identical but for the beads: white pearls for the quieter reading, red for the full festival one. The shaft itself stays plain and slim, so every detail sits above the coil and none of it fights the twist holding it in.

Next along, the roof and doorway give way to openwork: the Hair Pin Lantern hangs pleated gold fans under a pierced globe.
