A Hair Pin Lantern Pierced Right Through
The lantern is a small gold globe, wider at the belly than at the neck, and almost every surface of it is cut away: scrolling filigree on the body, an open crown on top, a pierced base. Above it hang two glass beads and a cast hand closed around a flower. Below it fall three short strands of beads, each ending in a pleated gold fan that flares like a folded paper tail. Nothing here is solid except the shaft.
The Filigree Is the Lampshade
Switch it on and the openwork stops being decoration. The light does not sit behind a frosted bead, it escapes in lines and points through the cut-away scrollwork, so the globe reads far brighter than its size suggests. Off, it is simply a gilt gourd lantern of the kind hung in a doorway. Two versions, both gold throughout: pale peach beads for the restrained one, opaque red for the version that is plainly dressed for a festival.
Filigree again, but with ears: the Light Hair Pin weaves the moon rabbit in gold and hangs teardrop pearls beneath it.
